You come home to your family, make dinner, feed the pets and turn on the TV to watch the news after a long day. The local meteorologist starts the segment with the “tropic watch”. The calm beautiful weather is about to change…there is a named tropical storm moving towards the States and even worse, closer to you. Everyone in the potential affected areas start to pay attention to the storms forecasted movement. Days go by as you continue to watch the weather while trying to decide if you are going to be within the “cone” of uncertainty. You start talking to friends, family members and neighbors trying to get a feel for every one on where they think the hurricane is going to go.
•Each day you watch as the hurricane creeps toward it’s target. The National Weather Center starts telling areas to take precautions; board-up their houses, get hurricanes supplies together, fill up your cars with gas, buy food & water for at least three days and possibly prepare to evacuate. The “cone” of uncertainty continues…people start getting anxious. The hurricane has now strengthened to a threatening level with the potential for a large affected path of destruction. People start the process of hurricane preparedness. The grocery stores get busier, lines at the gas station start developing, the home improvement stores are making record sales. Everyday life starts changing.
•People heed the warnings over and over again while still trying to figure out what to do. Now the meteorologist think they know where the hurricane might land. You start making plans for evacuating, but don’t know where you will go. You can’t find a hotel room, you have children or pets and you don’t want to go to a shelter. Most people are evacuating without a plan but you want to be prepared. What’s left for you to do?
• Join Hurricane Buddy June 15th 2006, so BEFORE a hurricane starts brewing you already have a plan in place and a place to go. Peace of mind, comfort, safety, and a plan are all things you should have ready before a hurricane is going to threaten you.
